This resource book on the Renaissance was prepared as a quick review for adults, for students, parents, teachers and librarians. It was part of the education outreach of a National Endowment for the Humanities project entitled Quest for the Renaissance.

I would like to thank the 7th grade English and Social Studies teachers at the Claremont Middle School, Oakland, California, who initially tested this Handbook with 300 enthusiastic students. The fourth printing was made possible by other teachers and librarians in North America who have found this resource a welcome addition to their texts.

Those teachers who are interested in participatory activities for use in the classroom should inquire about a supplement to this book which is available as an addition to their order: Bringing Renaissance History Alive in the Classroom. This supplement contains Renaissance games, dances, recipes, riddles and rounds.

I am grateful to those who contributed advice and suggestions, in particular Todd Wetherwax, Project Director, Robin McRae, who fine-tuned the manuscript, Catherine Dinnean, Library Graphics Service, University of California, who designed the book, and Neal Cavanaugh, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Castro Valley Unified School District, who posed the discussion questions based on Bloom's Taxonomy which are found at the end of the chapter.

The Handbook is listed with the U.S.Department of Education Clearing House for Social Studies/Social Science Education, a part of ERIC (Education Resources Information Center), the largest education database in the world. The California Department of Education has included the book in Instructional Materials Approved for Legal Compliance with the State Framework for History-Social Science. The Handbook is also listed as an "important resource" in the Course Model for the History-Social Science Framework Grade Seven, and Literature for History-Social Science Kindergarten through Grade Eight.
